The League of Nations was the idea of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. After World War II, Wilson published his Fourteen Points to Preserve Peace and Order in the World. The proposal for a “League of Nations”, which would act as an international arbiter in conflicts and impose peace, prosperity and freedom of the seas, was part of the Fourteen Points. Wilson gained a lot of international support, but failed to win the support of his own congress. Congress in the United States must ratify all treaties signed by the U.S. government. America was then resolutely isolationist and Congress refused to allow the United States to be a member of the League of Nations. As a result, the League remained without the most powerful nation in the world, one of the many reasons it would prove ineffective in the interwar years. The European Union has acquired supranational status because of the power of its Member States, which replace the powers of each of its States.
